Despite how much I love my Tesla, I’m not blind to its shortcomings. No car is perfect, not even a Tesla Model S. Did you ever think you would see a statement like that on this blog? Probably not, but I want to share my Tesla experience with you in its entirety, and that means the bad with the good.
Here are 5 things I do no like about my 2017 Tesla Model S:
Frunk is manual
Yes, having a front trunk (aka “frunk”) instead of a combustion engine under the hood is cool, and the extra storage is convenient. However, once it opens from the control center in the car or by using the key fob, it has to be manually shut. This means that when it’s raining, my hands are full, and/or it’s cold outside, I have to gently press down on the frunk to close and lock it. Meanwhile, there are cars with less technology that open the trunk when you wave your foot under the rear bumper. Also, if one applies too much pressure to the hood while closing it could create a dent. Being able to automatically close the frunk feels like a missed opportunity.
Higher insurance
Model S has received 5-star ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). It also has the added safety from Autopilot and Collision Avoidance. Yet, somehow, it is still noticeably more expensive to insure.
Where is the handle above the front passenger door?
My mother has fibromyalgia and arthritis in her knees so it wasn’t until she was getting out of the front passenger seat that she made me aware that the assistance handle was missing. Now, that is not a deal breaker for my mom, she still likes the car but now knows she will have buy/install that handle separately when she gets a Tesla, but I would have liked to see Tesla’s sleek, modern design for a traditional car feature.
Tesla Maps
Tesla’s Supercharger network is very convenient and gives Tesla ownership another advantage, but those charging stations are not everywhere. In those instances, it would be nice to know that there is a charging station from another company where you could be dining, shopping, etc. If Tesla maps showed ALL electric charging stations it would give its drivers that many more options.
Rear Windows
I’m not sure of the reason behind this design, but both rear windows do not go all the way down. This does not affect my drive in any way, and I have no real reason to dislike this other than it looks weird! The rear passenger windows are not even on “child lock” and go down half way, they just leave a random small piece of the window glass exposed.

I agree with the assistance handle – sometimes when my husband accelerates (fast) I wish there was one also! But a very interesting fact is that my model 3 insurance is super low- around $650/year! Even the insurance agent was scratching her head… 🙂 Thanks!

Hahaha yeah that would be a good time to have that handle too. Wow. That’s a steal! 👌🏾
